Wout Weghorst Reveals His Take on Messi: Inside the Interview
During a recent sit‑down with a leading sports network, Dutch striker Wout Weghorst opened up about one of the greatest players of all time: Lionel Messi. The interview, aired last week, gave fans a rare glimpse into how a modern forward views the Argentine icon and the lessons he draws from him. In the first 100 words, Weghorst already set the tone, saying that Messi’s influence extends far beyond the goal‑scoring record.
Weghorst’s Moment of Reflection: Why Messi Matters to a Dutch Forward
Weghorst’s admiration began in his childhood years in Groningen, where watching televised matches of Barcelona was a daily ritual. He recalls, “I was amazed by how Messi could stay low and still change the game.” That early fascination evolved into a professional respect after witnessing Messi’s consistency during the 2019 World Cup. “His discipline on the field is something every striker should aspire to,” he added, underscoring the impact Messi has had on a player who relies more on physical presence than technical finesse.
Key Takeaways From the Interview
- Work ethic and preparation – Weghorst highlighted Messi’s relentless training regime, noting that “he’s always the first on the pitch and the last to leave.” The Dutchman sees this as a blueprint for mental resilience.
- Leadership without drama – Messi’s calm command over the Barcelona midfield was cited as a lesson in quiet authority. Weghorst praised how the Argentine “leads by example” rather than through loud commands.
- Technical brilliance coupled with positioning – Weghorst admired how Messi’s low center of gravity and impeccable ball control allow him to navigate tight spaces. He compared this to his own style of using height to shield the ball and hold up play.
- Personal growth from the comparison – After hearing the comments, Weghorst admitted he started focusing more on agility drills to complement his natural strength, aiming to become a more well‑rounded striker.
Context: Weghorst’s Journey From Groningen to Dortmund and the World Stage
Before joining Borussia Dortmund, Weghorst’s career spanned clubs in the Netherlands, Belgium, and England. Each step taught him adaptability, yet his most significant growth came under the guidance of a coach who stressed the importance of studying great players. When asked if Messi’s play influenced his tactical understanding, Weghorst answered that the Argentine’s movement off the ball inspired him to “learn how to read the game better.” This mindset shift has been credited with his improved goal‑scoring form at the Bundesliga.
How Messi’s Influence Shapes Weghorst’s Playing Style
Messi’s ability to glide past defenders with minimal body contact contrasts sharply with Weghorst’s more physical approach. Despite the differences, the Dutchman noted that Messi’s keen spatial awareness taught him to look for gaps in the defense. He now attempts to anticipate play before the ball arrives, using his height as a tool rather than a crutch. The result is a more efficient finishing technique, especially in the final third.
Beyond the Pitch: Off‑Field Lessons from Messi
Messi’s modest upbringing and philanthropic endeavors resonated with Weghorst. “He’s a humble champion,” the striker remarked. Weghorst believes that Messi’s humility, combined with his consistent charitable work, offers a blueprint for balancing a professional career with personal values. The interview also touched on how Messi’s calm demeanor in high-pressure moments provides a mental model for staying composed during crucial games.
Weghorst’s Future Aspirations: Carrying Messi’s Legacy Forward?
Looking ahead, Weghorst expressed a desire to emulate Messi’s blend of skill and leadership. He envisions taking on a mentorship role for younger teammates, much like Messi does with the Barcelona squad. “It’s not about copying him,” Weghorst emphasized, “but about absorbing his principles and applying them in my own way.” In the broader context of German football, he hopes to elevate the Dutch striker’s reputation as a player who can bridge the physical and technical aspects of the modern game.
